SR. Afro Chicks & Breeders Limited is the largest egg producer company in Eastern Africa involved in laying, growing and brooding with a capacity to produce 1,000,000 high quality, natural eggs per day.  SR. Afro Chicks & Breeders with its plans to expand further, the company sought for environmental permission for the expansion of the commercial poultry broiler farm on plots 1508 and 1509, Block 1026 at Kikomeko Village, Nyimbwa Sub-county, Luwero District.

 

SR. Afro Chicks & Breeders Limited applied for environmental authorization from National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) where GISSAT was contracted to carry out an Environmental Social Impact Assessment that was in accordance with the requirements of the laws relating to environmental management in Uganda and guidelines for Environmental Impact Assessment (NEMA, 1997)

 

The overall objective of the project was mainly to transform upon the existing farm into a contemporary and profitable farm for rearing of broiler birds and production poultry feed.  Development of the project in a socio-environmentally responsive manner required collective and proactive responsibilities starting with prudent sustainable design by the architectural and engineering (A&E) contractor, responsible implementation, monitoring and maintenance by SR Afro Chicks and Breeders Limited all in compliance with Uganda environmental guidelines.

The methodology used consisted of;

 

1.Desktop studies that involved review of relevant literature on environmental impacts for the proposed project as well as the review of reports and background documents, public consultations and field studies inter alia

 

2.Field investigations which comprised of bio diversity surveys, environmental sampling and analysis, independent review of site conditions.

 

3.Project disclosure and stakeholder engagement.
