Detailed description of project

Services offered:

Crest FOAM LIMITED (CFL) owns and operates a foam manufacturing facility at Ntinda Industrial Area within Nakawa Division. The factory was commissioned in 1987 with an installed capacity of approximately 500 mattresses per day to meet the growing demand for both the domestic and regional market.  CFL has since achieved commendable production performance/productivity levels and posted impressive operating results within a short period of its inception.

The overall company objective of the foam manufacturing project was to increase the production of mattresses that meet the National Standards to address the current market demand.

Crest Foam Limited contracted Gissat Environment Associates to conduct an Environmental Compliance Audit at their facility to determine whether the ongoing activities comply with the requirements set out in the regulatory project approvals for the foam manufacturing plant operations.

The other objectives for conducting the audit were to:

  1. Identify and propose remedial measures to improve the management of the facility and how to mitigate environmental and social impacts, if any.
  2. Verify compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines and to identify potential environmental risks associated with pre-existing conditions as well as with on-going, and potential future conditions; and
  3. Assess the identified risks in terms of potential liabilities, including mitigation of the identified non-conformances.

Gissat Environment Associates undertook an environmental audit following a methodology which involved desk reviews of documentation, site visits, interviewing of stakeholders, inspections, sampling and measurements.  There were also consultations with facility staff / section supervisors, key informants and neighbouring establishments, on-site and off-site observations, air quality, noise and occupational health and safety assessment to verify that pollution control equipment onsite is operational and in compliance with requirements of the remedial action plan and to triangulate information obtained through interviews.

This was followed by an assessment of the findings and evaluation of the environmental non-conformances associated with operations at the facility.  Corrective remedial measures were formulated to reduce adverse impacts to levels as low as reasonably possible.

Gissat furthermore considered various aspects on or off the facility including:

  • Use of PPE
  • Waste Management
  • House keeping
  • Air quality management (foam dust, particulates)
  • Chemical spill management
  • Soil erosion control
