The project involved the preparation of an environmental and social impact assessment for the proposed development of the Pharmaceutical Plant; this was carried out in compliance with the legal requirements contained in the National Environment Act, 2019 and the Environment Impact Assessment Regulations, 2020 to identify the likely negative impacts of the proposed development to the environment and resources; and to recommend appropriate mitigatory measures.

 

The proposed development sought to employ a highly experienced, qualified and skilled workforce that would ensure that the day-day operations run as per set guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) to manufacture and sell high quality generic and branded human drugs. The company intended to foster a culture of constant scientific enhancement of their pharmaceutical formulations so as to continuously expand and improve the product portfolio in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practices

 

The objective of the assessment was to carry out a systematic examination of the present environmental situation within the project area to determine whether the proposed project will have adverse environmental impacts to the surrounding area

 

The methodology Gissat used consisted of desktop studies to review literature on environmental impacts emanating from construction and operation of the proposed project. Field investigations were undertaken to establish baseline physical, biological and socio-economic environmental aspects. Baseline data for the study area was collected using a combination of: site reconnaissance, desktop research, analysis of maps and plans, review of reports and background documents, public consultations and field studies inter alia.
